Yar’Adua’s Cabal: Who They Are PDF Print E-mail

yaradua-cabalLouis Okoroma of Leadership Nigeria provides an inside look at the inner circle of Nigerian President Yar'Adua. Below is a short excerpt of his post:

"It is in the absence of a better description, and to underscore their frustration and anger, that both Dora Akunyili and those clamouring for a Jonathan takeover, refer to the ardent Yar Adua loyalists as a cabal. The Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, defines a cabal, as a small group of people who are involved in secret plans to get political power. This definition does not adequately capture the true position of the Yar Adua handlers. The Yar Adua handlers or core loyalists are not seeking power, on the contrary, they are already in power, and are used to power, otherwise they would not appear as formidable as they are and forcing their detractors to cry out. The group is working hard not only to remain in power by ensuring that there is no change in the status quo, but that even if that were to change, it will be on their own terms. It is better to describe this core loyalists of the President as a Mafia. Again, the source quoted above, tells us that a Mafia, is a group of people within an organisation or a community, who use their power to get advantages for themselves. It is only people who are privileged that can be near a sick President or King, and be trusted to attend to the ailing sovereign. And normally, as has happened in history, while watching over the sovereign and praying for his quick recovery, these minders have their other eyes on how to make use of their vantage position notwithstanding what happens to the sovereign. In history, such people have manipulated all and sundry for their own ends, including lying about the true condition of the helpless sovereign . The Nigerian public has accused this mafia around the President of stalling the resolution of the political impasse caused by the ill health of the President as well as the inability of anyone including the Acting President, to gain access to him."
